The Gift of Time and Aging
Life today is so fragmented! Enormous pressures at home and at work can age us prematurely. We begin to wonder what life is all about. Remaining centered in a frantic world becomes a job in itself. How we age depends on many variables. We need to set the course for calm wisdom and now is the time to exercise life-changing attitudes. Come join us and learn how to help yourself and your clients slow down inwardly, get a sense of life’s true purpose and age gracefully.

Building Resiliency: Surviving and Thriving During Difficult Times
Resiliency is the ability to respond and adapt to adversity. It’s not something magical that only certain people possess, but a set of skills that can be learned. Highly resilient people do not necessarily experience less adversity, yet they are better equipped to navigate it. Characteristics of resiliency include flexible thinking, problem solving skills, stress management, healthy coping, and strong social connections. This program will explore examples ranging from personal challenges to national disasters and define and offer ways to turn tragedy into triumph.

Using Films to Understand the DSM IV, Part 2
This course is a continuation of the first course for counselors and social workers to help them identify mental health disorders. An assortment of popular films will be used to help understand the criteria of the disorder, as it is described in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. You will continue to learn the standard of ruling out criteria when diagnosing and the controversies clinicians face as they diagnose mental health disorders. Many different films will be shown as examples of mental illness disorders that were not covered in the first session. Group work will help facilitate learning and a closing group activity will include an application exercise that will include using trainee’s diagnostic skills, case plan goals, and treatment plan outlines.

Random and Happy Impulses: ADHD and Childhood Bipolar Disorder

Picture a child who is impulsive, talkative, distracted, disruptive, restless, sometimes is angry or crying, and gets into conflicts with adults. Does this child have ADHD or Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (PBD)? Or both? And how can we be helpful to this child? This workshop will give beginning and experienced counselors and therapists the tools to answer these questions. We will learn how to differentiate between the ADHD and PBD versions of the symptoms found both in ADHD and PBD, and learn how to see the symptoms which do not overlap. We will also deepen our understanding of the brain, body, and medications. And of course, we will discuss how to apply our new understandings in treatment, learning to specifically address these supposedly “overlapping” symptoms differently if they are driven by Bipolar Disorder.

Presenter: Jim Foley, MSW, LISW-S (bio)
CRN: 20019
Friday, December 11
8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
