Engineers and Surveyors
Course Schedule - Fall 2009 |
Ever wonder how our current day engineering design principles came to be? This course will take the student through the technological and theoretical advances throughout the ages that have brought us to our current understanding of Civil Engineering. Topics to be discussed include: Ancient Designers and Builders, Greek and Roman Advancements, Designs of Medieval Masons, and Civil Engineering in the Industrial Revolution. See how past mistakes and successes played a role in shaping Civil Engineering.

The US Government information shows the amount of money that flows between different industries and the GDP. From this information can be found the technology cost to produce your product or service, its value to your customer, and your value added, which includes number of employees and their costs. This class will examine how to mine this information to see how much it costs for your industry to service your customers - and how much it costs for your customers to adapt your product to their use. If you wish to improve your bottom line, it is possible to determine the impact of operations cost reductions and automation on your labor costs. We will discuss the impact changes in the GDP will have on your industry. And if you decide to venture into another industry, you will be able to compare the same results for the industries of your consideration - compare apples to apples to determine the best returns for your new venture.

This training will examine the many confusing aspects of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. For example, if a designer wanted to hold two round features concentric which GD&T symbol should be employed? Concentricity? Not usually. A much cheaper and more effective callout would be tolerance of location at RFS. Can you define a ‘Feature of Size’? Without understanding this term most experts would agree that GD&T will most likely be used incorrectly. And what exactly is the difference between ‘circular runout’ and ‘total runout?’ These and many other fundamental points of confusion are examined through practical design and production applications of GD&T.

This class will focus on the 2009 Carlson Civil and Survey Suite Software package. This package enhances Autodesk Map/Autodesk AutoCAD to help Surveyors increase their productivity and create professional looking documents for their clients. This class will cover the basic tools and commands necessary to create a plats, deed descriptions, boundaries with coordinate geometry, and topographic maps. In addition, this class will investigate area and volume quantity capabilities.
