Miss Stark County Scholarship PagentBy Julie Sproul and Cherie Barth On a cold but sunny day, the young ladies who were competing in the annual Miss Stark County Scholarship Pageant converged at the North Canton Civic Center; accompanied by all the paraphernalia that would make them beautiful – dresses, shoes, makeup, hair care products, and that ever necessary “butt glue.” There to welcome them, once again, were the smiling faces of the Beta Gamma Epsilon volunteers (Julie Sproul, Jina Clay, Tonya Strahler and Cherie Barth). This year, there were two additional volunteers in the persons of Howdy Bear and Kappa Koala! As much as Howdy wanted to help in the dressing room, we restricted his duties to the food service. After a few of hours of interviews, the girls ate a quick lunch of Sloppy Joes, chips, and veggies and then proceeded to run through the evenings events from talent practice to a run-through of the entire evening. With the pageant beginning at 7:00 p.m., shortly after eating a light dinner of salads and baked potatoes (compliments of Wendy's) the girls began the regimen that would turn them from very pretty into very beautiful. And they were – thirteen very beautiful young ladies wowing the judges with evening gowns, talents, and bathing suits. However, at the end of the evening there could only be one winner; but, in our eyes, they were all winners. The outcome of the evening crowned a new Miss Stark County – The lovely Laura Estrada! Laura was awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship and, as the 13th and the last official Miss Stark County, she will retain that title. Laura was also the winner of the Grand Talent Award at the Miss Ohio pageant of 2006 and was awarded the Marvin Hamlisch Award for classical music. Both Laura and last year’s Miss Stark County, Elyse Healey, will vie for the title of Miss Ohio. The First runner-up was the lovely Miss Lauren Shatlock who received a $200.00 scholarship; and the Second runner up was the lovely Miss Alyssa Speicher who was awarded a $100.00 scholarship. The lovely Miss Amy Allen was voted by her peers as the contestant who exhibited the Most Spirit and was awarded a Miss USA bracelet. In spite of the Super Bowl, there was a nice turn out and I believe everyone had a wonderful time.
