Dental Hygiene Program
Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)

  • Suggested Course Sequence

  • Certificate of Competency in EFDA

Associate of Technical Studies in EFDA
The expanded functions dental auxiliary (EFDA) technology program prepares you for a career as an advanced dental professional employed by private dental offices, dental clinics and public health facilities.

This program is available to students who are interested in learning expanded restorative procedures (how to fill teeth) and are currently Ohio or nationally certified dental assistants (CDA), registered dental hygienists (RDH), or dental hygiene students who have completed a minimum of one year in an ADA accredited degree program.

After two semesters of study and completion of the major courses, you will earn a certificate of satisfactory completion and are able to sit for the Ohio EFDA examination offered by the Commission on Dental Testing. If successful on the state’s written and practical exam, and upon registration with the Ohio State Dental Board, you will be permitted to use the EFDA initials following your name.

An associate of technical studies in expanded functions dental auxiliary technology may be earned through the completion of additional coursework and three additional semesters of student.
Major courses (DHY226, DHY 227) only offer a Summer or Fall start.

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be admitted to the program:

  • possess a current Ohio or National Dental Assisting certification, Registered Dental Hygienists credential or have completed a minimum of one-year in an ADA-accredited dental hygiene program.

  • complete the College admissions process including completion of the COMPASS test and providing high school and/or college transcripts for evaluation.

  • successful completion of or proficiency in college mathematics (MTH100).

  • maintain an overall college GPA of at least 2.00.

  • submit a health program application to the Registrar’s Office.

*Note: For students not currently working chair side in a dental office or completing their first year of a dental hygiene curriculum, successful completion of DHY128 is required prior to beginning any other EFDA course.

Applicants/students are responsible for informing the program director of any misdemeanor related to alcohol or drugs, or felony conviction, so that they may be informed of the steps the Ohio State Dental Board will take before considering their application for licensure.
