Massage Therapy Certificate of
Competency and Review

Stark State College is an approved provider for the online Certificate
of Competency and review course for both the Anatomy and Physiology and Limited Branch portions of the State Medical Board Test for Massage Therapy.

Please note: If you have previously failed both sections of the test 3 times you will need BOTH certificates in order to retake the exam. Getting only one of the certificates does not allow you to retest.

The course for both the A&P and the Limited Branch allow those who need the Certificate of Competency to earn it completely online. Both courses end in time for you to submit your application to the board together with the certificate and take the test shortly after the review is over. The course room remains open after the course is over so you can continue to review right up until time for the State Board test.

The A&P review content:
The content of the A&P review is based on the curriculum document from the state medical board that outlines the knowledge that is testable material. The 10 week online course will cover the entire Tortora text. Comprehensive power point and other presentations and links will guide you through the course. The course will be monitored daily by the professor who has a PhD in physiology. She will communicate with you via email and answer any questions you might have. The required text is the 10th or 11th edition of Tortora.

The Limited Branch Course:
The content of the limited branch course follows the curriculum document provided by the State Medical Board of Ohio as content that all entry level massage therapists should know. The comprehensive online course is 10 weeks and provides power point presentations, links and case studies to apply your knowledge. Required texts are the State Medical Board approved texts: Beck Theory and Practice of Therapeutic Massage 4th Edition and Kellogg’s Art of Massage.

Both courses are 3 credit hours and based on current tuition rates at SSCT which is currently $127.00 per credit hour, plus an application fee of $65.00 and a $14.00 processing fee. Total cost of each online course is $460.00. (Add $60.00 per credit hour for out of state tuition). Fees may be paid in installments – please contact registration to make that arrangement.

If the student is taking the course to obtain the Certificate of Competency, they must earn a “B” average (80%) in the course to get the Certificate. Upon successful completion of the course, applicants will receive their certificate and are eligible to retake the State Board Examination.

After the course is over the Web site will be left open so you can continue to review the course work and tests as often as you like up until the testing date.

The next course will begin in July, 2008 and end in early October – check back to this site to see specific dates.

Registration is now open for both classes. The application process is outlined below. Please read carefully and then submit the proper documentation.
