Hospital Phlebotomy Technical Elective |
|
Purpose
Hospital phlebotomy is designed to train individuals who want to pursue
a career as a phlebotomist in a hospital setting. |

Infant Heel Stick |
|
|
This course focuses on anatomy,
physiology, and medical terminology pertinent to phlebotomy. The course
includes: venipuncture and microcapillary puncture skills,
collection/handling of specimens, transporting specimens, off-site testing,
and blood drawing in special units of a hospital. Quality assurance,
infection control, safety, law and ethics are important elements of the
course.
Admissions Requirements:

Application to the college

Proficiency in math fundamentals (31 or above)

Minimum high school GPA 2.0 or GED

Course Requirements:
- Liability insurance
- Textbook/clinical competency manual
Lab coat and exam gloves
- Health status / immunization requirements/
physical exam
- All phlebotomy students must comply with
the physical exam requirements
necessary to allow student access to class/lab and hospital.
- All Stark State health technology students
must demonstrate their immune status prior to the end of the first four
weeks of class
- CPR Certification
- Lay Responder CPR certification is required prior to hospital clinical experience.

Spring Semester

Lecture - Tuesday, Wednesday from 6 - 8 p.m. weeks 1 - 8

Lab experience - Thursday 6 - 8 p.m. weeks 1 - 8

Course Completion
Requirements:
Students must successfully complete
the lecture/lab and clinical experience to be eligible to sit for the
national
phlebotomy certification exam.
Certification Exam
Eligibility:
Successful completion of the hospital phlebotomy course is required to
sit for the (ASCP) American Society of Clinical Pathologists
|
|
| national
certification exam. Students must achieve 100
documented, successful venipunctures and 25 documented, successful finger
punctures during 120 hours of clinical experience.
