The RN completion for the paramedic degree offers paramedics an avenue to transition into nursing, capitalizing on the skills they have already obtained through emergency services training.  This program offers paramedics the associate degree nursing education required for licensure, and a foundation to pursue further educational opportunities in nursing.  This program is offered as a WEB Level II modality which is more accommodating for paramedic work schedules.

Applicants to the RN completion for paramedics program must be graduates of an accredited paramedic program.  The paramedic seeking consideration for advanced standing admission to Stark State College’s associate degree in nursing (ADN) program must meet the following requirements:

1.  Complete an application for admission to Stark State College.  Be a graduate of an accredited paramedic program. 
2. Have and maintain current certification as a paramedic in the State of Ohio.  For out of state applicants or anyone trained in the military as a paramedic, the applicant must hold a current paramedic national registry certification.
3. Submit an original copy of the high school transcript and/or GED scores and transcript from an accredited paramedic program.
4. Have completed one year of high school chemistry with a grade of “C” or better within the past five years, or show equivalency.  The Introduction to Algebra course is a prerequisite to Introduction to Chemistry.  Credit for the Introduction to Algebra course may be obtained in one of three ways:  previous college credit (grade of “C” or better), testing out on COMPASS Assessment, or completing the course at Stark State College of Technology with a grade of “C” or better.  If Intro to Algebra is waived prior to taking Intro to Chemistry or General Chemistry, the course may still be required depending on COMPASS scores.
5. Complete the COMPASS Assessment at SSCT and take any developmental courses required as a result of that test. 
6. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in twelve hours or more of college work. 
7. Score at the 60th percentile or higher on the National League for Nursing Pre-Admission Examination for Registered nurses (PAX-RN test).
8. Complete the following courses prior to admission to the ADN program with a grade of “C” or better:  Anatomy & Physiology I and II, General, Organic & Biological Chemistry I and II, General Psychology, and College Composition (22 credit hours).
9. Effective as of January 1, 2007, if a pre-nursing student does not complete the following courses, with a grade of “C” or better by the third attempt within a seven year span, including withdrawals, the student will not be permitted to apply to the nursing program:

BIO101:  Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology
CHM101:  Introduction to chemistry

1.  Effective as of January 1, 2007, pre-nursing students must complete any non-nursing courses in the nursing curriculum with a grade of “C” or better by the third attempt within the last seven years, including withdrawals, or they will not be permitted to apply to the nursing program.  This requirement also remains in effect once the student receives their letter of acceptance to the program.
2. Provide documentation from the applicant’s supervisor/employer/chief medical director/designated EMS coordinator of recent paramedic experience and/or hospital emergency department experience (within the past three years of application).

Fulfilling this above criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the nursing program.
