The Defense Metals
Technology Center (DMTC), located on the Stark State College
campus, has established a co-op program with the College that
enables engineering students to study at Picatinny Arsenal in
New Jersey. Charles Clark, executive director of the DMTC,
explained that the co-op program, funded by the DMTC, will allow
selected students with computer-aided design (CAD) and metals
machining training, to spend a semester at the Picatinny
Arsenal.

Kenneth Engel,
Jr. of Canton and David Schrader, Jr. of Alliance, both design
engineering students, began their 16-week co-op January 14. They
will work in the Prototype Fabrication Laboratory, of the U.S.
Army – Armament Research, Development & Engineering Center (ARDEC),
learning the practical application of their academic training
while assisting with existing Army projects, particularly in the
machining and fabrication of titanium that could ultimately help
to keep American troops safer.
“Each day we hear
about how vulnerable our troops are around the world,” said
Dr. John O’Donnell, Stark State president. “Through this unique
co-op program,

and David will work to help develop defense metals, especially
titanium that could potential save lives in the future.”

Cong. Ralph Regula
(R-Ohio, 16th), was instrumental in the establishment of the
DMTC last year, with a preliminary mission to connect the
Northeast Ohio metals industry and academia with the strategic
metals needs of the Department of Defense. A principal goal is
creating lower cost-effective access to critical metals used in
military hardware.
Cong. Regula
praised the DMTC and SSCT for so promptly initiating this co-op program. “I want the
success of this first program to spawn additional workforce
training programs at SSCT in titanium machining and welding.” Regula added,
“As students complete these programs, they will greatly improve
our local talent

According to
Clark, the DMTC subsidy of the co-op program for the students
includes: 12 paid SSCT credit hours of tuition/fees and books,
free lodging at the arsenal, travel reimbursement, a weekly
monetary stipend and a laptop computer.
Clark expects the
program to expand to six students who next September. |
