Stark State College dental hygiene students receive

Four Stark State College second-year dental hygiene students received first place honors and a combined $250 cash prize for their research presentation at the Ohio Dental Association (ODA) Annual Session held recently in Columbus.

Megan Adorni of Mogadore, Mindy Bittner of Westfield Center, Tara Slabach of Massillon and Jay Watkins of Massillon presented their research entitled, “Oral Jewelry: Is it worth the cost?” in the dental auxiliary category. The group competed against students, educators and licensed practitioners from across Ohio. This is the first time Stark State students have presented at the ODA Annual Session.

  In addition, two Stark State dental hygiene students recently were awarded academic scholarships through the Ohio Dental Association, Akron Dental Society Claypool Barlow Fund. Kelly Greissing, a first-year dental hygiene student from Wadsworth received $3,000 and Danielle Laria, a second-year dental hygiene student from Medina, received $2,000.

Established by Dr. James F. Claypool, the Claypool Barlow Fund awards scholarships through the ODA to students in dental school or dental hygienist school, or to practicing dentists and dental assistants wishing to take advanced dental training. Applicants must be sponsored by an Akron Dental Society member and complete an essay describing their reasons for pursuing dentistry, their scholastic achievements and their financial need.
