Stark
State College partners with Stark and Akron Urban Leagues

"I’ve always
had a goal in life to be a carpenter and build my own
home with my own hands. Right now, I feel like I’m
heading in the right direction.”

Stark State College and
the Urban Leagues of Stark County and Akron have teamed up to provide
educational opportunities in civil engineering and construction
management to economically disadvantaged adults in Stark and Summit
Counties. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is funding the
initiative. Dr. Frank Fuller, Stark
State department chair and instructor of engineering technologies, said
the program began spring semester and serves approximately 70 residents
and students -- 20 from Stark County and 50 from Summit County. Stark
State’s role in the partnership is to provide the classroom and
laboratory instruction. Students have the opportunity to earn a
construction technician certificate of competency from Stark State,
which is comprised of five courses from the civil engineering
technology-construction management option curriculum. The students take

course per semester for five
semesters. Local organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity,
provide “on-the-job-training” experiences for the students. |
| “This is an outstanding
opportunity for minority students to earn certificates in construction
management, which is a high-growth, high-demand field,” said Dr. Fuller.
“The certificate is a ‘career-ladder’ that leads to the associate degree
in civil engineering technology-construction management option. All the
partners, including Stark State and the Stark County and Akron Urban
Leagues are encouraging students to complete the certificate program and
continue on for the associate degree, which leads to even greater job
opportunities.” Stark State President
John O’Donnell said the program is one example of the College’s mission
in action. “We are committed to providing access to education to all
individuals in our community. In visiting with students in the
classroom, they |

expressed to me how enthusiastic and grateful they are for this
educational opportunity, which can lead to rewarding
employment that can change their lives and their families’
lives.” |

“I
love the opportunity here to help go further
in life. I’d like to continue with my
education and become an electrician. My
professor is great; if it wasn’t for him, I
might not have stayed.”
