State sets new record with over
8,400 students on first day of fall semester
Stark State College began
its first day of the fall semester Monday with a record 8,403 students.
Welcoming more than 8,000 students to campus this fall is a new
milestone for Stark State. Last year’s official fall semester headcount,
as reported to the Ohio Board of Regents on the 14th day of each
semester, was 7660.
Stark State is the
largest technical college in Ohio and the seventh fastest-growing,
public mid-sized two-year college in the nation (U.S. Department of
Education, 2007). College officials attribute the increase to academic
programs that lead to careers in market-driven fields, more Web-based
courses, convenient scheduling and accessible satellite locations.
“As we grow, our focus is
on preserving core institutional values, including quality instruction,”
said Dr. John O’Donnell, Stark State College president. “With expanding
enrollments, particularly in
high-growth, high-demand health fields, we will celebrate the
groundbreaking of a new Health Sciences Building this Thursday that will
provide needed space for expansion of current programs and addition of
new programs in health sciences.”
Governor Ted Strickland,
U.S. Congressman Ralph Regula (16th District) and Chancellor Eric
Fingerhut will participate in the groundbreaking ceremonies.
“In addition to the
Health Sciences Building, scheduled for completion in 2009, the College
expanded classrooms, laboratory facilities and parking lots during the
past year to accommodate continued enrollment growth,” said Thomas A.
Chiappini, vice president for business and finance.
