How to Save Office 2007 files as Office 2003 files

Click here for a PRINT-FRIENDLY version of this information

Microsoft Office 2007 has updated the Menu bar drastically. The “File” menu has been replaced by the round Office logo (Figure 1)

Clicking the Office logo gives all of the functionality of the “File” menu in Office 2003 applications, such as New, Open, Save, Save As, and Print, along with several others.

For example, in order to save your file as an Office Word 2003 document (backward compatible file), using Word 2007:
   • click the Office logo
   • click the arrow next to the Save As command
   • click on “Work 97-2003 Document” link (Figure 2)

This will open the “Save As…” window, give the file a meaningful name and pick a location on your PC to save the files. You will be able to open them using Office 2003.

A similar procedure can be used in Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. The only difference will be the document type, i.e. in Excel you will save as a Excel 97-2003 Workbook.
