How to Make Your Profile Smaller |
 |
|
Error Message Displayed:
You have exceeded your profile storage space…
Before you can log off, you need
to delete items or move some items from your profile to network or local
storage. To reduce the size of your profile use the following directions below,
or turn off your PC (by pressing and holding the button on the PC
until it powers off) and contact the Help Desk at Ext. 4357.
When the limit has been reached
on a profile, Windows XP will not allow you to logoff until you
have reduced the size of your profile. You should be sure to save all of your
personal documents to your Home Folder (U: Drive) or on removable media
(Flash/USB Drive). In order to reduce the size of your profile you must move or
delete some of files. Once you have deleted enough files, Windows XP will allow
you to logoff.
Typically, the profile storage
space is exceeded because of software update downloads that go to your profile
instead of the C drive or a slow network connection when you logoff and your
profile is not written completely back to the file server. When this occurs you
need to delete the files in in the Application Data folder in your profile.
To find the Application Data
folder open My Computer and double-click on:
C: Local Disk> Documents and Settings> [Your CollegeID]> Application Data
(Figure 1).
You may delete any or all
of the folders listed under Application Data, you may get an error about some of
the folders being in use or not accessible, skip these folders and try to delete
other folders.

| Figure 1 |
If the Application Date folder
does not appear in your profile folder, it may be hidden. In order to display
the hidden folders while using Internet Explorer click on the menu bar and
select the following path: Tools> Folder Options> View tab
Click the Advanced Settings
button and there is a toggle for Showing or Not Showing Hidden Files and
Folders. Change the toggle to “Show hidden files and folders” and Click OK (Figure 2).
This will apply the settings and
close the window. You should now see the Application Data folder. There may be
other files that were hidden; you should only delete files and folders that are
inside the Application Data folder. You can also reverse these steps to hide
these files after you are below the profile limit.

| Figure 2 |
You should now be able to logoff.
This process may have to be repeated from time to time depending how large your
profile is getting.
Again, as mentioned above, if you
want the Help Desk to help you with this process, hold in the power button to
turn off the pc in order for you to not leave your account logged in. Contact
the Help Desk at Ext. 4357 (HELP) or come to the Help Desk on the second floor of
the business building. |
