Wireless Internet Access
Goes Live |
|
Stark State is proud to announce the
availability of Wireless Internet Access in selected areas of the College.
There are also a number of wired Internet access points available. Students,
faculty, staff, and visitors can now take advantage of this exciting new
service on campus.
What is Wireless Internet Access?
Any mobile
wireless device such as a laptop or PDA can connect to the Internet from one
of the Internet Hot Spots in our wireless access areas using an 802.11g or
802.11b wireless card.
Where is Wireless Internet Access Available
on Campus?
The four access areas are:
- The cyber cafe and lobby area (both
floors) of Building C (including the area just outside the north and south
doors)
- The cafeteria (including the courtyard
immediately outside of the cafeteria) on the first floor of Building S
(Student Center)
- The quiet study area on the first floor of
Building H (Health)
- The atrium located in Building B
(Business)
Where is Wired Internet Access Available on
Campus?
Wired Internet access is available from drops located in the pillars
on the first and second floors in the Cyber Café and Lobby area of building
C.
How Do I Connect to the Wireless Access?
Follow the directions that you received with your wireless card and
software. Typically you would do the following:
- Equip your laptop or PDA with an 802.11b
or 802.11g-compatible wireless Ethernet adapter (also called Wi-Fi
compliant) and software.
- Locate a Wireless Access Area.
- Start your browser and access the
Internet.
Will My Card Work in the Future?
We may add
new capabilities to the wireless network in the future. Some of these
capabilities may require that your wireless card and software support
certain security standards if you want to access these new capabilities. It
is possible but not certain that you will need a wireless card that supports
the LEAP security protocol to access these additional capabilities. Many
wireless cards available today support the LEAP protocol. In the future you
will continue to be able to access the Internet without the addition of
these security features.
Questions or Trouble?
The College provides open access for everyone on campus but cannot supply
support to students with their personal mobile wireless devices. If you are
having problems connecting to the wireless network you must resolve the
problem yourself. Please do not contact College support staff or you
instructor. If you are certain that the problem is not with your PC and you
verify that others are having similar problems then please report the
problem using the College’s Web based Help system. More information on
wireless can be found on the following links:
