Student Grants and Work Programs

Federal | State | Institutional | Social Service Programs  | Loan/Tax Credits


FEDERAL PROGRAMS

  • Federal Pell Grant (PELL) – $890 to $4,371 per year based on financial need. Apply through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Eligibility is based on financial need, enrollment and cost of education.
  • Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) – Allocation of funds is at Stark State's discretion, and awarding of funds is based on need and application date. Award amounts vary up to $400. Apply through the FAFSA. According to federal regulations, students must be Pell-eligible to receive FSEOG funds. You MUST apply EARLY! Funds are limited!
  • Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) – Allows students to be employed at the college to earn money for educational expenses. Apply through the FAFSA. Awards are based on financial need and student request. An award does not guarantee earnings; students are paid with a bi-weekly paycheck for hours actually worked. Eligibility does not guarantee employment.

STATE PROGRAMS

  • Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) – A new program for first-time college students beginning with the 2006-2007 award year. Recipients must be Ohio residents. OCOG can be awarded to either full-time or part-time eligible students. Benefits are restricted to the student's instructional and general fees. Any student enrolled prior to the 2006-2007 award year will have eligibility determined for the OIG.
  • Ohio Instructional Grant (OIG) – Tuition assistance for students with family income under $39,000. Students must be an Ohio resident, enrolled full-time at an Ohio college. To apply, submit the FAFSA by October 1, 2008. Funding from either program may never exceed tuition.
  • Ohio National Guard – If a student enlists in the National Guard for six years, the National Guard will pay 100% of tuition costs. The student must be an Ohio resident enrolled in at least six credit hours at an Ohio college. Contact the Ohio National Guard at 614-336-7032 for more information.
  • Montgomery GI Bill – If you serve in the Army Reserve or the National Guard, you may be eligible to receive education benefits while attending classes. You can receive up to $251 per month while you are a full-time student. In addition, you may qualify for Stafford loan repayment. Contact the local Army Reserve or National Guard Office for more information. The Registration Office certifies enrollment for this program

INSTITUTIONAL PROGRAMS

  • Stark State College Academic Scholarship – Awarded to 50 area high school seniors. Selection is based on GPA (minimum 3.0), extra-curricular activities, and high school attended. Award amount varies but is intended to cover 100% of student's instructional and general fees for their first academic year. Deadline to apply is February 27,each year. See your guidance counselor or the Stark State Financial Aid Office for a scholarship application.
  • Scholarships – For a complete listing of scholarships awarded by Stark State College consult our Scholarship and Endowment Programs Brochure. Any information on outside scholarships that the Financial Aid Office is made aware of is posted on this Web site and on the board outside of our office. For additional information on scholarship funding visit www.fastweb.com or your local library.

SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAMS

  • Workforce Initiative Association (WIA formerly JTPA) and
    Trade Adjustment Act (TAA) –
    Assistance for individuals who recently lost jobs or are entering the workforce after an extended period of unemployment. For information about WIA and TAA, contact the Employment Source at 330-433-9675. Students must complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for grants before being considered for WIA funding.
  • Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR) – Educational assistance may be available for students with special needs. Call the Canton (330-438-0500) or Akron (330-643-3080) BVR Office for more information.
