Twins on a tandem road to success

Haley and Hannah Schillig have different life plans, but they’re both sketching out the schematics at Stark State College.

The Louisville-area twins have decidedly different career paths. Haley is a computer programming and database major with plans to use the skills she’s honed at SSC to expand her already-burgeoning business, Intellect Productions. Hannah is getting some biology basics under her belt before heading to the University of Akron’s baccalaureate program and then to Ohio State University for a dentistry degree. She too, dreams of being self-employed: the seven years she spent wearing braces piqued her interest in opening her own orthodontics practice.

Haley’s resume already has plenty of accomplishments in the online world. She recently was named the winner of the Ohio Board of Regents’ Choose Ohio First website design contest with a creation that incorporates the organization’s logo, colors and the shape of Ohio. The contest, open to all Ohio college and high school students, challenged students to design and build a website to recruit talented Ohio students into STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) fields. Her winning design, selected by public vote and the Ohio Board of Regents staff, will be the home page for the website. Interested in Web design and development since age 10, Haley taught herself the trade before coming to SSC to fine-tune her skills. She got her first job – as an artist – at 15 and now has an internship in Web design and programming at Aultman Hospital. And she’s making her mark at SSC. Information technology professor James Barlak, for instance, has found that while Haley’s generally quiet in class, the standout student’s tests make a very “loud noise.”

Intellect Productions offers Web design and development, programming and logo, mascot and business card design. The business already generates enough income that she’s helping her sister with school expenses.
