Stark State College names top faculty, staff

2019 top faculty and staff

(North Canton, OH – May 14, 2019) – Stark State College has named its top faculty and staff members for 2018-2019. Angela Smith Alder, associate professor and coordinator of justice studies, received the Distinguished Teaching Award; Kip Gardner, adjunct instructor in biology, earned the Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award; and Scott Lehman, assistant director of financial aid, was chosen for the Distinguished Staff Award.

Smith Alder (pictured center), of Canton, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, a juris doctor from the Creighton University School of Law and a master of laws degree from Harvard Law School. A member of the Nebraska Bar Association, she has had work published in several law and education journals. The Nebraska native has held numerous positions in education and academia, serving students from pre-school to graduate levels. She also clerked for the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. Most recently the pre-law director at University of Mount Union, she has been at Stark State since 2010.

Gardner (pictured right), a North Canton resident, earned bachelor’s degrees in biology (ecology) and political science (pre-law) and a master’s degree in biology (molecular and cellular), all from Old Dominion University. His professional experience has varied from zookeeper to research, including climate study. Before coming to Stark State to teach environmental science in 2010, he served as the director of the agricultural system division at Filtrexx International. Also an adjunct faculty member at University of Mount Union, Gardner owns Creekview Ridge Farm near Minerva, where he is establishing a restorative/organic system of production.

Lehman (pictured left), of Massillon, earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Toledo. He has spent 22 years in student financial aid at the University of Toledo, Hiram College, Lourdes College and at Stark State since 2005. He has served in officer and chairman roles in the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, is a member of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and has been a member of numerous Stark State committees.
