Stark State alum Nelson Bernstein is building his future, one ingredient at a time
A graduate of Stark State College’s culinary arts program, Nelson Bernstein lives in Aurora, Ohio, and balances work at Heinen’s grocery store while running his own small pastry business. Through his passion for cooking, he’s working toward his dream of owning a restaurant.

Nelson’s culinary journey began in middle school after attending Young Chefs® Academy. Then, he gained additional experience through his high school’s Work Ready program. Along the way, he cooked during his time as a Boy Scout and also earned second-place honors in the Geauga County Fair baking contest two years in a row.
When Nelson toured Stark State’s campus and saw the culinary arts facility in person, he knew he’d found his perfect fit.
“It looked like a real restaurant kitchen,” Nelson said. “It was then that I discovered the college I wanted to attend.”
Nelson graduated from Stark State in January 2026. He credits his skills and confidence to the College’s hands-on culinary program and the opportunity to learn face-to-face from experienced professionals.
“My journey taught me about doing what’s right for not only yourself, but everyone around you,” Nelson explained.
In the professional kitchen and café environment, Nelson developed his own sense of creativity. He believes he was called to share his creative gifts with the world, whether through his cooking or other talents.
As he continues pursuing his dream, Nelson remains grateful for the foundation Stark State provided. Through any journey, Nelson has one message: Always have hope, no matter what.
