Math is vital to just about everything we do.
It’s an essential part of our lives on a daily basis and can open a world of opportunities in many majors. Stark State’s mathematics degree helps you develop in-demand problem‑solving and analytical skills that employers value across data‑driven industries, from technology and finance to health care and advanced manufacturing.
Program details
In our program, you’re required to take 32 credits in mathematics, including:
- The entire calculus sequence (I-III)
- Linear algebra
- Ordinary differential equations
You also will need to take coursework in other arts and sciences disciplines, including:
- English and oral communication
- Social and behavioral sciences
- Arts and humanities
- Natural sciences
Careers and outcomes
Mathematicians can work in a variety of fields, including actuarial science (insurance), data science, finance, research and education.
Most employers in these industries require a bachelor’s degree, which makes earning your associate degree at Stark State an affordable first step. A large number of our program graduates transfer to a four-year college or university to earn their bachelor’s.

Yes. Stark State’s mathematics degree is built specifically with transfer in mind.
We’re part of the Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathway program, which helps ensure our two-year degree in mathematics transfers smoothly and efficiently to any four-year degree program at an Ohio public college or university. The courses in our mathematics program are pre-approved at the state level to transfer.
If you’re looking to transfer to a private or out-of-state college or university, contact that school regarding transfer requirements before taking courses. We maintain close partnerships with local private colleges, including Walsh University, the University of Mount Union and Ashland University.
You should work closely with your academic advisor throughout your time at Stark State. They can help you decide the right classes to take and even help you reach out to the mathematics departments at four-year institutions.
Most of the required and elective courses are offered both online and in person. However, our higher-level math courses, starting with calculus, are only offered in person.
We offer tutoring in math for all majors, including mathematics majors, in our Math Learning Center. Math tutoring is available at main campus in North Canton in room E214, at the Akron location in room A108, and online through the college’s Learning Management System. Your academic advisor can help you navigate your program from course choices to transfer.
