Youโ€™ll study social behavior, cultural and ethnic diversity, and the historical and contemporary forces shaping society. This program prepares you for entryโ€‘level roles such as research assistant, marketing assistant, analytics assistant, caseworker, or public service worker, while also supporting transfer opportunities to fourโ€‘year institutions.  

Youโ€™ll complete coursework designed to strengthen research, communication, teamwork, and ethical decisionโ€‘making skills, including a capstone project in sociological research. 

  • Art Moyer Scholarshipโ€” awarded to students(s) registered in Human and Social Services, AA-Arts, Applied Sociology, or Psychology major, traditional or non-traditional student, full- or part-time, minimum GPA 2.70, and must be nominated by a faculty in the degree areas listed. Students should file FAFSA* before June 1 and complete the Foundation general application to be considered for Foundation scholarships.

The degree lays a solid foundation for continuing your education in sociologyโ€ฏthrough a bachelorโ€™s degree and beyond. While the program is designed for transfer, graduates may be employed in positions that assist social and human service personnel.

Yes, the majority of courses available in the Associate of Arts program are Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36) or Transfer Assurance Guidelines (TAG) approved, so the majority of courses transfer to public and private institutions.

Stark State College offers multiple ways for students to pursue prior learning credit. Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) can apply to knowledge gained from work experience; training programs and/or certifications; military service; and CLEP, IB, or AP exams. Learn more about credit for prior learning.   

Most in-person classes are limited to 24-30 students and online courses are limited to 27 students per section.
