Consider Stark State Collegeโs associate of science pre-medical professional degree as your first step. Youโll get the foundational coursework in the sciences and math required for most pre-medical professional degrees. Our courses are taught by highly credentialed faculty in a small classroom setting, promoting discussions between you and your instructor and you and your peers.
Our laboratory facilities have been ranked as centers of excellence, giving you hands-on experience in todayโs lab techniques.
Best of all, most of our courses will transfer to public universities in Ohio.
Program details
Stark State College partners with the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) for students interested in becoming a pharmacist. Complete allโฏpre-requisite courseโฏwork at Stark State and directly apply to the College of Pharmacy at NEOMED. No bachelorโs degree needed. Not only do you get a high-quality education, but also strong support and advising from both Stark State and NEOMED.
If youโre interested in a pre-medical degree related to medicine, dentistry, or veterinary, youโre encouraged to contact the university where you plan to complete your bachelorโs degree to determine which electives are best suited for your program.

Full-time students typically complete the degree in five semesters (two years), including a summer term. Part-time students generally finish in eight semesters (four years). Summer courses may shorten the time to completion.
Yes. Stark Stateโs flexible schedulingโday, evening, and online coursesโallows students to progress while working full-time. Note: Lab courses require in-person attendance.
Yes. A science scholarship is available through Stark State College, along with additional need-based scholarships. Students should submit a scholarship application each academic year.
Yes. All courses transfer through the TAG or OT36 programs. TAG courses transfer as direct course equivalents, and OT36 courses transfer as natural science credits for general education.
Yes. Transfer partnerships include the University of Akron, Kent State University, The Ohio State University, Walsh University, and the University of Mount Union. Stark State also participates in the Ohio Guaranteed Transfer Pathway Program for seamless transfer to participating private institutions.
Lab courses are capped at 20 students. Online courses may enroll up to 27 students, and in-person lecture courses up to 30 students, which is the departmentโs maximum.
Yes. Students can participate in research and internships through NEOMED, gain shadowing experience at local medical facilities, and conduct research with Stark State faculty. Students are also encouraged to pursue internships or co-ops with local companies and colleges.
Many general education courses are available both online and in-person. Science courses require in-person labs, while lectures may be taken in either format.
The Science Learning Center offers free tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic support at the main campus, the Akron campus, and online.
Pre-medical students plan to enter professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, chiropractic medicine, optometry, and others. These pathways share common prerequisite requirements, many of which can be completed at Stark State. Most programs (except pharmacy) require a bachelorโs degree and an entrance exam before applying.
Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Rootstown, Ohio, offers degrees including MD, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. The Doctor of Pharmacy program does not require a bachelorโs degree for admission, and students can complete all prerequisite courses at Stark State.
Yes. Students may work with NEOMED, conduct research with Stark State faculty, or participate in specialized experiences such as cadaver dissection. Students are also encouraged to seek external internships and research opportunities.
These courses fulfill the capstone requirement for the biology degree and can serve as electives for the pre-medical professional concentration. Students work with a faculty mentor to complete a project tailored to their interests, such as research, internships, faculty-guided projects, or professional shadowing. The goal is to help students clarify academic and career pathways.
Yes. Many courses in this program are available through College Credit Plus (CCP). If you complete CCP courses with passing grades and meet any prerequisites, the credits will apply directly toward your associate degree.
