FAQs

An associate degree in science significantly enhances your employability. Many employers require candidates to hold an associate degree or higher education credential as a minimum qualification. Our Chemistry program provides you with valuable technical skills, laboratory experience, critical thinking abilities, and problem-solving expertise that are highly sought after across numerous industries including healthcare, manufacturing, quality control, research support, environmental services, and technology sectors.

Our program is specifically designed with transfer students in mind. Most of our courses transfer seamlessly through the Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36) guarantee and/or Transfer Assurance Guide (TAG), ensuring your credits will be accepted at four-year institutions throughout Ohio. We offer a comprehensive range of second-year STEM courses that are well aligned with university requirements, including calculus-based or algebra-based physics, organic chemistry, calculus, differential equations, astronomy, and forensic chemistry. This means you can complete upper-level coursework here and transition smoothly into your junior year at a university, saving both time and money.

We offer scheduling flexibility to accommodate diverse studentsโ€™ needs. Many courses are offered in a hybrid format, which typically combines in-person laboratory sessions with online lectures, giving you hands-on experience while maintaining schedule flexibility. Additionally, you can complete some coursework in the evening or during summer sessions if necessary. We offer fully online courses, including some lab courses. Almost all of our courses can be taken in person.

It is possible to earn the Associate of Science General degree fully online, including a variety of science laboratory courses, such as forensics, astronomy, chemistry, meteorology, oceanography, and climate studies. Please note that some courses for our STEM majors, particularly advanced Chemistry courses, are only offered in person to ensure the highest quality hands-on learning experience.

Please note that laboratory and lecture components are integrated into one connected course and are not offered separately, ensuring a cohesive learning experience.

We provide multiple course format options to fit your schedule and learning preferences. Courses are available in 16-week traditional semester formats, 8-week accelerated formats (offered in the first 8-week, second 8-week, and summer terms), and 5-week intensive formats in the summer only. This variety allows you to customize your educational pace and complete your degree on a timeline that works for you.

Absolutely! We accept transfer credits from accredited institutions, particularly those that meet Ohio Transfer 36 (OT36) and TAG requirements and match our course offerings. Beyond traditional college credits, we also evaluate and grant credit for prior learning gained through work experience, military service, previous education, Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores, and international coursework. Our admissions and advising teams will work with you to maximize the credits you’ve already earned and create an efficient path to degree completion.

Yes! We have a Science Learning Center (SLC) with both peer tutors and Bachelorโ€™s level tutors ready to help students in most of our science courses. Tutoring is offered in person and online. This is free to all students, as well as our other learning centers for Math and Writing.

We have a caring Disability Support Services (DSS) office, ready to help you with any accommodation you may need. Be it for extra time on an exam, a service dog, or a broken leg.

Our faculty are always eager to help in their scheduled office hours. Office hours are offered in person and online as well. Additionally, your advisor is a professor in your field, and hence knowledgeable in your program and the subtleties of your needs.

Students in our science degree programs qualify for most scholarship opportunities available at the college. We particularly encourage you to apply for Choose Ohio First scholarship and explore our Sciences Scholarship. These are specifically designed to support STEM students. Our financial aid office can help you identify and apply for funding opportunities that match your academic profile and program of study.

Yes! Our program offers exceptional flexibility for students. You can pursue multiple associate degrees simultaneously by declaring your preferred major first, followed by secondary majors. A popular combination includes Chemistry with Pre-Med and Chemistry with AS General. This approach allows you to build a robust foundation across multiple STEM disciplines while maximizing your educational investment and career opportunities. The AS โ€“ General Degree can be paired with any of these majors.

Our faculty are exceptional, highly qualified, dedicated, passionate and genuinely student-focused. The faculty truly care and want their students to succeed in the classroom and beyond. The faculty bring both academic expertise and relevant career experience to the classroom, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. A distinctive feature of our program is that all laboratory science courses are taught by faculty members, not teaching assistants. This means you’ll receive direct instruction, mentorship, and guidance from experienced professionals throughout your entire academic journey.

Our science laboratories provide an outstanding learning environment with small class sizes, excellent facilities, and exceptional instrumentation for a 2-year college. Students gain hands-on experience with professional-grade equipment and resources including Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), telescopes with imaging instrumentation, numerous digital sensors, advanced microscopy equipment, and polarimeters. Our laboratory instruction and facilities ensure that you develop practical skills that are directly applicable to workplace settings and advanced academic programs.

Yes! We offer multiple pathways for undergraduate research experience. Students can participate through our Honors Program, enroll in independent research courses (SCI), or pursue internship opportunities with external organizations. Research experience is invaluable for students planning to transfer to four-year institutions or enter competitive career fields, and our faculty are eager to mentor motivated students in meaningful projects.

No. Unlike many institutions, we do not charge additional laboratory fees or extra costs for our science courses. Your tuition covers all laboratory materials, equipment usage and course resources, making our science programs not only academically excellent but also financially transparent and affordable.

We offer several employment opportunities for students, including positions such as peer tutors in the Science Learning Center, student laboratory technicians, and various other job opportunities throughout the college. These positions provide valuable work experience, help offset educational costs and allow you to deepen your understanding of course material while developing professional skills. Working on campus also helps you build connections with faculty and staff who can serve as mentors and references for future opportunities.
