Stark State’s help desk and computer support specialist program prepares you to provide technical support for computer systems, software and networks in a variety of workplace settings.
You’ll build the skills needed to diagnose and resolve technical problems, assist users in person and remotely, and support today’s essential technologies. The program is ideal if you enjoy problem-solving, working with people and technology, and want a direct path into the IT workforce.
You’ll learn how to install, configure and maintain computer systems, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, and provide customer-focused technical support. Coursework covers operating systems, networking fundamentals, cybersecurity basics and help desk operations, preparing you for entry-level IT roles and industry-recognized certifications.
Also, Stark State offers a computer maintenance and desktop support technician certificate as well as a help desk and computer user support certificate, both of which can be completed in two to three semesters. All classes in the certificate can be applied directly to the associate degree.

You can pursue roles such as help desk technician, IT support specialist, desktop support technician, technical support specialist (product/software support), IT support analyst/Tier 2 support and IT coordinator/assistant.
The estimated number of job openings (from replacement needs, retirements etc.) is about 50,500 openings per year despite the small decline.
Graduates work at IT consulting firms, managed service providers for user-support roles, educational services, government, software publishers/technology product companies and companies with internal IT support.
The associate degree requires 64 credits and can be completed in about two years. The certificates can be completed in about two to three semesters.
Courses are offered online, on the main campus and in some hybrid formats.
Options may include the Choose Ohio First Scholarship, Fortisure Fellows Scholarship and federal aid through FAFSA.
Some credits will transfer. However, we don’t have a specific articulation agreement for Help Desk, so you’ll need to check with your school of interest.
