Stark State College features artwork of Massillon native Lauren Baker through Feb. 27

“Destination Venus,” acrylic and airbrush on canvas, by Lauren Baker

(North Canton, OH – Feb. 4, 2020) – Artwork by Lauren Baker will be featured in a showing through Feb. 27 in the Stark State College gallery on the second floor of the Student Center.

The exhibit is titled “The Era of Red Electricities That Lived in Our Lungs Before Lightening.”

Baker creates sculptures, installations and paintings that explore the space between familiarity and fantasy, many of them simulating growth structures, colors and textures found in nature. Drawing inspiration from biochemical formations, geological formations, the deep ocean and outer space, Baker blurs the lines between abstraction and representation.

The Massillon native earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture from Kent State University in 2010 and a master of fine arts degree in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2013. Now an Akron resident, she teaches in the sculpture department at Youngstown State University. Her work can be seen at www.laurenbaker.net.

The public is invited to attend a reception for the artist from 6-7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in S203 of the Student Center. Stark State is located at 6200 Frank Ave. NW in North Canton.

All art is available for purchase with 25 percent of the proceeds going to the College’s aesthetics fund for the purchase of artwork for the campus.

The gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. For more information about the show, call 330-494-6170, ext. 4733 or email mover@starkstate.edu.
